Rototiller Safety
Rototillers are a convenient way to ease the burdensome work of digging. However, these modern innovations can also be dangerous if not used properly. According to the CPSC, nearly 2,000 rototiller accidents occur ever year. Following a few common sense safety tips can help keep you and your family safe during planting season:
- Always read your manual before use. Be familiar with all the features and buttons of your tiller.
- Inspect rototiller for damage before turning on.
- Wear boots and long pants.
- Use a model with a shield guard.
- Never operate your tiller in an enclosed area. Don't be a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Watch out for rocks, roots, utility lines, pipes, and other debris.
- Do not over-work your tiller.
- Keep your body away from the tiller tines.
